ITR filing: How to check the status of your income tax refund online

Income tax refund: Once you file your income tax return (ITR) for a specific financial year, you are eligible to obtain a refund of any taxes you paid in excess of what you really owed. But the tax department will not release the income tax refund until it has processed your ITR and sent you an acknowledgment. The Income-tax Act of 1961, section 143 (1), authorizes the issuance of this communication. The current deadline for filing returns is July 31, 2024, for the financial year 2023–2024 (AY 2024–25).

The State Bank of India (SBI) processes the income tax refund, which is then directly transferred into the bank account that the taxpayer specified when they filed their ITR. As a result, it is essential to confirm that the IFS code and bank account number entered are accurate. It’s also crucial to link the PAN to the bank account and have the bank account pre-validated on the government’s new income tax e-filing platform.
