GST official gets 3 years in jail over Rs 25,000 bribe in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In a bribery case, Jitendra Kumar Dagur, the former Superintendent of Central Excise and Central Tax (GST), was fined Rs 5 lakh and given a three-year prison sentence by the Special Judge for CBI cases in Bengaluru.

The CBI filed a case against Jitendra Kumar Dagur, the Superintendent of Central Excise and Central Tax (GST), Honnavar Range, Uttara Kannada, on March 26, 2021. The charge against Dagur is that he demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs 25,000 from the complainant in exchange for the complainant waiving the tax and penalty for the financial year 2015–2016.

The allegation against the accused centred on the purported demand and acceptance of Rs. 25,000 from a complainant in exchange for the waiver of tax and penalty liabilities for the financial year 2015-2016.

Subsequently, the CBI meticulously orchestrated a sting operation, setting a trap that led to the apprehension of the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe sum of Rs. 25,000 from the complainant.

On August 27, 2021, the CBI filed a charge sheet against the accused after conducting a thorough investigation. Following a trial in which arguments and evidence were presented, the court handed down its decision, finding the accused guilty of the charges made against them and imposing a sentence appropriate to the seriousness of the offense.

The CBI later laid a trap and caught the official red-handed. It charged him on August 27, 2021, an official release said.
