Pratap Singh said in his police complaint that someone may have stolen his identity because he doesn’t have even a fraction of such a large turnover. “I have been driving an e-rickshaw for the past four years and earn Rs 400-500 a day, which is barely sufficient to feed five family members, including our three children. I can’t even think of such a huge amount in my wildest of dreams ,” a shocked Singh told.
On October 19, Singh said he received a call from the income tax department asking him to come into their office. “When I reached there, they served me the tax notice of Rs 3.47 crore,” he stated in his complaint.

When he informed the I-T department about his work, they advised him to file a police complaint because someone had obtained a GST number in his name and used it to start a business. In 2018-19, the company’s yearly turnover was Rs 43.44 crore, and a tax assessment of Rs 3.47 crore was made against the provided PAN number, which was registered in Pratap Singh’s name. Pratap, a Bakalpur village resident, explained that he required a PAN card for banking purposes and went to a Jan Suvidha Kendra in March 2018 to obtain one. After a month, he was promised he would receive the PAN card.
He contacted the center again when he didn’t receive it. A man named Sanjay Singh later gave him a coloured photocopy of the PAN card. “Because I am uneducated, I was unable to distinguish between the original PAN card and the photocopy,” Pratap stated in his complaint.
