A chartered accountant (CA) was arrested by a special unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh in exchange for assisting a person in an income-tax investigation against him and clearing some of his files. The accused demanded a bribe of Rs 5 lakh, claiming that he was accepting it in order to give it to income tax officials.
According to the BL soni, Director General of the ACB, a complainant approached the headquarters and stated that a chartered accountant named Punit Mohnot was demanding a bribe of Rs 5 lakh in exchange for assisting him in an income tax investigation against his firm.
“The accused assured him that by paying some bribe his problem would be solved and this will help him in closing the investigation against the complainant which is pending at the income tax department. The complainant approached us and our team after verifying the complaint laid a trap in which the accused Punit was arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh,” said Soni.
Pushpendra Singh Rathore, additional SP, ACB who led the operation and verified the complaint, said, “During the verification the complainant told the accused that he only had Rs 2 lakh to which the accused asked him to bring that only. He said that he would add Rs 1 lakh and the bribe of Rs 3 lakh would be paid to the authorities.”
Asked if the ACB will probe the role of the income-tax authorities the CA was indicating, Rathore, said, “This is all part of the investigation. Through the interrogation we will find on whose behalf he was taking the bribe or was he taking the bribe for himself,” Rathore said.
