What if you find that the goods and services you received from the supplier is not registered or making a fraud invoice and collecting the tax by giving wrong GSTIN? Or you find that supplier is collecting tax but you did not receive ITC, how to verify that supplier is filling the return or not? There are many cases found by GST Department in which the business is charging GST even if it is not registered.
For such purposes, to verify that
- GST Number is valid or fake?
- GST return is filled by supplier or not?
The GST Portal provides “Search Taxpayer facility” to verify the above points. The motive behind introducing the search tool was to check authenticity of the GST Number, to verify the identity of the supplier/GSTIN holder and to avoid the fraud conduct by issuing the fake invoices by GSTIN fraud.
Format of GSTIN:
Procedure of Validating GSTIN:
STEP 1: Go to GST portal.
STEP 2: Select ‘search taxpayer’ tab, the dropdown will show the following options:
- Search by GSTIN/UIN
- Search by PAN
- Search composition taxpayer
Option 1: Search by GSTIN/UIN:
Enter GST Number of the taxpayer entity in the box and enter captcha text and click on Search Button.
- If GSTIN is Correct, you can see the full information of the taxpayers.
- If GSTIN is Incorrect, an Error message will be displayed on your screen.

You can check GST return status of last 10 returns filed by the GST Number by clicking on Show Filling Table:
Option 2: Search by PAN–
Enter PAN Number of the taxpayer in the box and enter captcha text and click on Search Button.
After clicking the ‘search’ button, the portal will display table showing GSTIN/UIN registered against a given PAN along with its status and the state where the GST registration has taken place.
Click the mentioned GSTIN, you want to open and the same page open as in the case of OPTION 1: Search by GSTIN/UIN with prefilled GSTIN, now enter the captcha and click on search the same details are opened as in option 1.
Option 3: Search in case of Composition Taxpayer –
This option is used to verify that the supplier is a composition taxpayer or not and from which date. There are two options present i) Opted in, ii) Opted out. Select the required option you wish to search.
After choosing appropriate option you can search the taxpayer by i) GSTIN /UIN
Or ii) State option where you have to choose the requisite state, financial year and legal name of the business you wish to search.
After selecting the option you have to enter captcha text and click on the search button.
The following details are displayed:
- Legal name of the business, trade name,
- Date of registration,
- GSTIN/UIN status etc.
Advantages of GSTIN search and verification tool:
- Verification of authenticity of any GST Number.
- Protect yourself from transaction with dealers who provide fake invoices.
- Avoid GST Fraud.
- Useful to verify unclear GST Number in case of hand-written invoices.
- Help Government by reporting such type of activity.
Important point to keep in mind:
GST Number should be verified before making any purchase or sale. If GST Number of vendor is wrong then you may face problem in taking Input Tax Credit (ITC). If GSTIN of customer is wrong then you will face problem in filing returns as well.
