With the July 31 deadline for filing income tax returns tomorrow, there is increasing pressure on social media for an extension, as many taxpayers are encountering glitches during the process.

She explained that such demands often arise as the filing due date nears, typically due to technical problems encountered during the process.

“While such calls normally arise when the date draws closer, mostly due to technical glitches, the recent communications by the IT department regarding the number of taxpayers who have already filed, and their recurring reminders suggest the process is in order and may not warrant a date extension,” an expert said.
She also pointed out that extending the deadline could negatively impact the entire process, including the processing of tax returns.
“Date extension also has a ripple effect on ITR filings for other categories of taxpayers and the processing of returns. So, until the situation affects a large section of taxpayers or there is an emergency beyond control, it is unlikely to happen,” she added.

Meanwhile, the tax department has urged taxpayers to complete filing their ITRs by the July 31 deadline to avoid penalties for late filing.
A Chartered Accountant, said, “Currently, taxpayers and tax professionals are facing certain technical issues on the Income Tax Portal. For instance, failure in saving the details filled in the portal. Some are even facing issues while downloading Form 26AS. Considering such technical difficulties, the government may consider extending the deadline for furnishing the return of income to avoid genuine hardship for the taxpayers.”

However, he highlighted that any decision to extend deadlines should carefully weigh the benefits of increased compliance and reduced taxpayer stress against the administrative requirements and timelines for processing returns.
“It is advisable for taxpayers to file their returns as early as possible to avoid last-minute issues and ensure they meet the deadlines set by the department,” he said.
