Fake Income Tax officers

Fake Income Tax officers: In connection with a case in which a gang posing as income tax officials had barged into the house of a real estate businessman and robbed him. Police have arrested five men, including a journalist, for allegedly robbing a realtor’s family of Rs 3.5 lakh at his residence in RMV II Stage recently in Bengaluru.

The incident took place on January 23 morning, when the accused Manjunath, a sub-editor with Kannada tabloid Aarakshaka Suddi and a resident of Sanjayanagar, and his accomplices Mohammed Syed Rabbani, Kumar Dharmesh alias Rudresh and Prashanth alias Jayanth, all real estate brokers entered the realtor’s residence. Rabbani and Prashanth posing as Fake Income Tax officers searched the residence and took away Rs 3.5 lakh and two air pistols, reported.

Following the incident, Chetan R (22), a student, filed a police case against the accused. In his complaint, he stated his father Ramesh was a realtor and died last year. When the accused carried out the fake I-T raid, Chetan’s sister, mother and grandmother were present. 

Based on his complaint, police registered a case and arrested five people including the kingpin, Manjunath. Police recovered Rs 1.7 lakh, two air pistols, one car and a fake ID card from their possession.

Manjunath, who was the brain behind the raid, was found to be in possession of a pistol. The accused, during his questioning claimed that it is just an airgun. The pistol has since been sent to forensic science laboratory for testing, the officials said.

The police who checked CCTV footage nearby, got clues about the accused. They also got information from the location of mobile towers that the accused were in Vijayawada. A police team went there and brought the accused here. The police got to know that they had conducted two similar raids in the city in the past.
