An official of Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) revealed that over 3.3 lakh candidates appeared for the July term of the CA exams, despite the danger of Covid-19 and concerns about its impact. “Roughly about 40,000 students out of registered 3.7 lakh students had opted-out on the ground of Covid-19. About 3.3 lakh students have appeared for the exams,” CA Nihar Jambusaria, President of ICAI said.
The CA final and intermediate exams for the July session are now over, and the foundation course exams are scheduled to be finished this week (July 24-31), he added.
Even as some activists petitioned the Supreme Court, Jambusaria stated he had informed the central council that the ICAI was “well prepared (in terms of adopting Covid protocols) to conduct the exams.” He said that SC had permitted the CA Institute to proceed with the examinations as planned while issuing instructions on how to provide students with an opt-out option.

It may be noted that the CA Institute had to revise its previously stated opt-out option for Chartered Accountant students attending the July exams in order to comply with Supreme Court orders.
Following the recast, an examinee had the option of opting out if he or she, or any of his or her family members (living on the same premises), had suffered Covid-19 – on or after April 15, 2021.
Furthermore, the ICAI had stated that, in accordance with the SC guidelines, it will rely on the certificate of the registered medical practitioner for this purpose, and that the RT-PCR test result will not be required along with the request for opting out.

Previously, the ICAI had stipulated that opt-out would be available only if the examinee provided a Covid positive RT-PCR report, as well as the infected person’s Aadhaar card (examinee or the relative as the case maybe).
Examinees who were affected by the lockdown during the examination period were given the option to opt out, and the ICAI declared that the July 2021 examinations would not be considered an attempt for such students. Such examinees were allowed to sit for the next exam, which will be held in November 2021 for both the old and new syllabus students. This was useful for the students because some states were under lockdown, which had been extended during the examination period.
The ICAI had permitted examinees to opt out if there were any last-minute changes in examination centers in any city or if the examination center was in a containment zone, in accordance with the SC direction.
