income tax late fee

Income Tax late fee: The due date of filing Income Tax Return for Non- audit assessee was 31st July 2021. However, due to pandemic, the income tax department extended the due date of filing ITR for AY 2020-21 to 30th September 2021. Therefore, income tax late filing fees and interest under section 234A up to a certain extent shall be applicable only after the due date which is 30th September 2021.  As usual, technical glitches never leave the Income-tax portal.

Those person who filed ITR after 31 July were charged interest and late fees despite the extension of the deadline. Taxpayers need not to worry as income tax department has given assurance for refunding late fee and interest charged wrongly. The Income Tax department’s tweet is as follows-

“The ITR software was rectified on 1st Aug 2021 itself to remove the error due to incorrect computation of interest u/s 234A and late fee u/s 234F. Taxpayers have been advised to use the latest version of the ITR preparation software or file online.

If, by any chance, someone has already submitted the ITR with such incorrect interest or late fee, the same will be correctly calculated while processing at CPC-ITR and the excess amount paid, if any, will be refunded in the normal course.”
